Optical Relays VS Mechanical Relays

May. 20, 2018

Relays are electrically operated switches that can be roughly classified into contact (mechanical) and non-contact (semiconductor) types. Optical relays are semiconductor relays made of MOSFET light-coupled LEDs, which are mainly used as substitutes for signal relays. Optical relays do not contain moving contacts, so they have longer reliability than mechanical relays.

Mechanical relays generally have a low on-resistance, while optical relays have a series of high to low RON products. Some high-capacitance optical relays have a lower RON than mechanical relays. Unlike mechanical relays, leakage currents are generated when an output voltage is applied to an optical relay.
